Perhaps this is born of my own study of European history, but I have a very distinct head canon about how war was fought in Europe and what that meant for the personifications of the countries.
Here is my head canon:
Until WWI, war was not personal for the countries. To elaborate, they fought each other for land and prestige, but that didn't mean that they had a deep visceral desire to hurt each other. Nor did that mean that they tried to inflict damage on the personification of the country themselves. With the introduction of total war, the way that war effected the country was completely changed. When the entire population became a target (which had not been the case in earlier wars), war truly became personal. It was no longer a matter of dignity, it was a matter of deep personal hate and the desire to truly inflict damage on each other. Before, even when the war was being fought, they were all very cordial to each other.
This is just the way I see it, and people are perfectly within their rights to disagree. But, this is why I personally write WWII as so different from anything any of them have experienced before.
P.S.
I'm completely buried by finals week right now, but I wanted to share this with people because I want to have reactions/other opinions
If you would like to know some other head canons, I will share upon request.

On Prussia's Education
There seems to be a strange idea floating around that Prussia is disinterested in books or more lofty subjects. Nothing could be further from the historical truth.
From a historical perspective, Prussia would have had one of the most comprehensive educations early in his life. For example, he would have been literate far earlier than any of the other countries. In the middle ages, very few people were literate, including the nobility and royalty. None of the countries who were raised in a court setting would have learned to read. The only parts of any given population who could read and had a sizable collection of book were monastic orders. P
On Austria's Canon Portrayal
The canon has serious problems with historical accuracies, and I notice them especially in the Germanic countries. This is not because the inaccuracies are the most egregious there, but because that is my area of specialization.
Austria is an interesting case, because the canon lines up fairly well with the modern stereotype of the country. He is the quiet one who would rather play piano and drink coffee than start wars or fight battles. When he is in a war, he is saved by Switzerland or Germany or his wife.
It seems to have escaped the notice of the canon that to maintain such a large empire for such a long time, Austria resorted to brutal
On Prussia's Relationship with his Father
I am certainly not going to make any friends with this head canon because Prussia’s good relationship with his father is one of the few things that the fandom almost universally agrees upon. But, I am going to explain why I believe they have a very poor, neglectful relationship.
I do not see Prussia as having a good relationship with his father, and this is grounded in Prussia’s earliest days. The earliest German presence in the area that would become East Prussia was the Teutonic Knights. The fact that Gilbert was the Teutonic Knights is canon. But, it is an important choice. There was a small electorate in Brandenburg as well, a

I totally agree with you. Especially when it came to WW2. In my mind this is when the countries became more human than any other time in their lives. My heart breaks to think how hard it was for Ludwig to loose Gilbert to Russia for a time. And how Gilbert lost Ludwig to Alfred. I think in my mind that the whole race to space was a way to show their frustration for being separated and their hatred for what happened at the end of WW2. More so for their mutual hatred for Ivan. And deep down I think Gilbert and Ludwig helped in the space programs as a friendly rivalry between brothers to show that they care and missed each other and I have a deep feeling that Gilbert was happy to see the American land on the mood because he knew that Ludwig was involved and he was very proud of his little brother.
